This three-day course focuses on the needs of veterinary technicians, zoo caretakers, and animal control officers to understand the skills and equipment associated with wildlife capture, chemical immobilization, and patient monitoring.

Each day will have an outdoor hands-on lab. The lab on Day 3 will include chemical immobilization and processing of captive wildlife in need of their annual veterinary care and inspection.


This course is one of the most extensive chemical immobilization courses in North America and includes hand-on labs with captive wildlife.
This unique course emphasizes professional and humane animal handling and covers practical techniques to maximize field success and human and animal safety. Class applying learned techniques for wolf's annual veterinary care and inspection.

Participants will learn how to contribute significantly to a wildlife handling operation and strengthens their ability to assist veterinarians in the field, as well as, veterinarians working in situations involving urban or captive animals.

Classroom instruction and outdoor labs will be taught at the Wildlife Science Center near Forest Lake Minnesota.

Completing a WVR course will enable participants to:
  • Prepare for and organize field operations with a five-step preparation method.

  • Identify Legal Responsibilities (documentation and storage) associated with wildlife chemical immobilization.

  • Discuss advantages and disadvantages of various immobilizing drugs and drug delivery systems.

  • Monitor temperature/pulse/respiration to assess animal health and anesthetic depth and to guide the immobilization rather than react to it.

  • Choose marking options including radio collaring, tagging, tattooing, pit tags.

  • Collect and process blood and other samples.

  • Perform prevention and treatment of veterinary emergencies.
Labs will include practice of drug delivery systems with targets and chemical immobilization of captive wildlife. These labs are scheduled to coincide with the animals' annual examination and treatment which provides a hands on opportunity for course participants. Labs are approved by the University of Minnesota animal care and use committee.

Professional/Academic Credit
Each participant will receive course handouts and a Certificate of Training. Veterinarians attending the course can receive Continuing Education Credits for state licensing.

Registration
Class size is limited to 25 participants. Reservations will be held only after full payment is received. This 3-day course is hosted by Argosy University. Students must register through Argosy Veterinary Technician Program.
